Since 2010, Clear Path has helped dozens of businesses become compliant with Ontario's Bill 168, an amendment to the province's Occupational Health & Safety Act, which requires employers to take active steps to prevent violence and harassment in the workplace. One year ago, our company had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a troubling situation in our own workplace. Luckily, no one was physically injured, but we learned quite a few lessons, including:
What happened: Part 1 Please note that we are intentionally obscuring some details because of an ongoing criminal case and to protect the privacy of those involved. One of our neighbouring businesses has travelling service people who regularly drive around the region in clearly marked company vehicles. On this particular day, one of their servicemen was turning left into a local coffee shop when he was almost hit from behind by another driver. Although there was not an actual collision, the second driver became incensed and followed him into the coffee shop and became irate in front of other customers. The serviceman decided to leave and drove away, immediately followed by the irate driver. Another customer at the coffee shop saw the escalating situation and decided to follow the two vehicles as well. Noticing that he was being followed, the serviceman continued driving and unsuccessfully attempted to "lose" the other vehicle. Eventually the serviceman decided to pull over in a parking lot and speak to his pursuer. The irate driver attempted to block the serviceman's truck and continued to rage against him. The customer from the coffee shop arrived and after appraising the escalating situation, advised the serviceman to get into his truck and leave, which he did (immediately followed by the irate driver). The serviceman drove back to the office (only a few minutes away), followed by the irate driver who had called into the serviceman's company's corporate phone line screaming threats and obscenities. The serviceman entered through the back door, which was promptly locked to keep the other driver out. However, the story continued... What happened: Part 2 The irate driver then made his way to the front lobby area (which Clear Path shares). He stormed into the Clear Path office yelling and demanding to see the serviceman. This was quite a shock to the two of our staff members nearby. They did not understand what he was talking about and were quickly trying to assess the level of risk from this large, distraught person. They soon realized he was speaking about an employee from our neighbour business and tried to direct him to their office. The irate driver refused to leave and accused our team members of lying and "hiding" the serviceman in our office. Eventually they were able to get him out into the lobby area but our neighbour had locked their front door as well. The irate driver became increasingly upset, screaming and threatening to kill the serviceman. Our employees attempted to remove themselves from this escalating situation and to lock our front door. They realized that the particular lock on our door made this difficult. At that time, it only locked from the outside, making it impossible for them to get behind the door and lock it from the inside. Our fast-thinking staff member was able to lock it, although this did increase the amount of danger for them. Police were called and the individual left the premises. He later turned himself in at the police and was charged and given a restraining order. Despite this, he continued to make threatening telephone calls to our neighbour for a day or so after this event. Police officers took statements from our staff and the legal process is continuing.
Are you compliant? If you have any questions about Bill 168, need help in assessing your risk in relation to workplace violence or harassment, would like an external third party to investigate an employee complaint, or are concerned you may not be compliant with the legislation, please contact Anna Aceto-Guerin at anna@clearpathemployer.com or (519) 624-0800. We'd love to connect with you!

Here at Clear Path, we believe that partnering strategically with other organizations is key to ensuring that we can provide value to our clients with a wide range of services, expertise, and connections. Anna recently met with our newest strategic partner Taylor'd Ergonomics, a consulting company based in Cambridge, Ontario that specializes in ergonomics and seeks to inspire, build, and support partnerships to advance ergonomics excellence. They serve employers in all sectors, from automotive parts and health care, to offices and airlines. In this blog, we sit down with Carrie Taylor, principal ergonomist and founder of Taylor'd Ergonomics, to gain some insight into how employers can incorporate ergonomics into their Health and Safety training. Q: What types of projects do you typically get called in for? We get involved in many different types of projects...here are a few:
Q: With the July 1st deadline for Health and Safety awareness training approaching, do you have any thoughts on how employers can incorporate ergonomics into their training plans? Since strain/sprain injuries are THE leading type of injury in every single sector in Ontario, it stands to reason that employers should be providing ergonomics training for workers. For us as ergonomists, it’s important that the training focuses on what the employees can do for themselves, AND that the employer is simultaneously making efforts to improve the jobs. Our one-hour workshops, called “face-2-face”, give employees first hand experience in why, for example, they are stronger pushing forward than sideways, or how adjusting the height of their seat can change the way their back feels. ![]() Q: Do you have any best practices or tips for employers when it comes to ergonomics? Ergonomics isn’t just about comfort and injury reduction. A good ergonomics program can also improve productivity, quality, and reduce turnover and absenteeism by improving job satisfaction. A company may start out looking to contain their injury costs, but the bigger benefit may be the impact that we have on other aspects. For example, reducing a forward reach will save time, which can result in a higher productivity over the day, or may allow more time for inspection, resulting in less scrap and errors. To succeed, an ergonomics program needs to have support from managers and supervisors. Once they understand the value of ergonomics, they will be very helpful to the ergonomist in getting changes made! Most ergonomists have a kinesiology background, but not all kinesiologists are ergonomists. It's important for employers to ensure that the ergonomists you hire are certified and have the educational background and the experience needed to practice. Ergonomics cannot succeed as a “one-shot deal”. A company doesn’t “do ergonomics in February”. An ongoing effort is needed to keep ergonomics programs moving forward. We help companies to maintain this momentum through employee awareness contests, bulletin boards, lunch’n’learn sessions, and, of course, by continuously working toward implementation of job improvements. We'd love to connect with you!
![]() Many of you probably know Arlene Dickinson as one of the venture capitalists from the hit business reality show Dragons' Den on CBC. She's also CEO of Venture Communications and author of two bestselling leadership books. But what many of us don't know are the unique stories and experiences that lie behind everything she has become and all that she has achieved. The Clear Path team, along with 650 other local HR professionals, had the amazing opportunity to hear Arlene Dickinson at the annual Executive Night put on by the Grand Valley Chapter of the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA). Her keynote address, paired with networking and a delicious three-course meal, made the 2014 Executive Night an incredible success and a night to remember. ![]() "Leadership is about sharing your experiences" Throughout her address, Arlene drove home the idea that "leadership is all about sharing your experiences" - the things that make you who you are. Starting with her humble beginnings and her move to Canada as a young child, Arlene took us on a journey through her life - being incredibly vulnerable and transparent about the ups and downs that ultimately shaped who she is today. She described a time she was invited to Afghanistan to meet the Canadian troops stationed there. While in Afghanistan, she accompanied a General as he went to the front lines to address the soldiers at several different military bases. She called that speech "the best leadership speech she had ever heard" and, after hearing it spoken over 5 times, she was able to pull some invaluable points from it. ![]() The general three points: 1. You are an Indispensable Part of the Team As the soldiers approached the time when they could go home and be reunited with their families, it became increasingly difficult to stay focused. The General reminded them how important staying focused was - "If you don't stay focused, not only your life is at risk, but the life of your team and everyone around you. If one person can fail, everyone else can fail." Each member of the team is connected, important, appreciated, and needed. 2. What You're Doing is Important and Has Purpose He then reminded them of why they get up every day. When you're part of a team, or at work, you often spend more time with those you're working with than you're own family. Because of this, you need to feel purpose - feel appreciated. By understanding why you are doing what you are doing, by knowing that you are counted on, you can have the drive needed to focus and get the job done. 3. You are Appreciated The General also reminded the soldiers that they are appreciated. "Canadians know that the job you are doing is super important and that what you are doing is protecting the most important thing individuals have - freedom." (Source: The Telegram) It's about vulnerability And while the General delivered this speech - he did so with vulnerability. He admitted that he doesn't have all the answers or know what is going to happen next. But he also said that when he did know, he would tell them. He would be vulnerable, transparent, and reachable. And it's the personal manner by which he told the speech that made it so impactful for not only all the soldiers listening, but for Arlene Dickson who was observing. So much so that she has adopted this method of humble leadership. A leadership that is about "sharing your experiences" - showing people the things that make you who you are. And this was clearly evident in the way she approached her time at the Executive Night - transparent, vulnerable, and unafraid to share about the events and life experiences that brought her to where she is today. All in all, an inspiring night. ![]() Clear Path at Executive Night Here are some of our personal photos from the 2014 Executive Night. Anna Aceto-Guerin, President of Clear Path Employer Services, had the opportunity to meet Arlene Dickinson afterwards. Did you attend the 2014 HRPA Executive Night? What were some of the points that really hit home for you? We'd love to connect with you!
Here at Clear Path Employer Services, we place a strong emphasis on listening to our customers. Although we take steps to welcome and encourage this feedback on a daily basis, we have recently introduced an annual client feedback survey as a more efficient way to collect this data. The purpose of this survey is to create an open door for our clients to tell us how we are doing, what we are doing well, and what we can do better. Our aim is to translate this feedback into tangible, actionable goals focused on improving our overall service. We would like to thank those of you who took the time to respond to our survey this year. It is very important to all of us here at Clear Path that we are exceeding the expectations of our clients in the quality of service we provide, the value of our recommendations, and our overall client experience. If you did not get a chance to participate in the survey this time around, we would still like to hear from you! Feel free to connect with your primary consultant or Anna directly to tell us about your experience, including any times that we may not have gotten it quite right. Thank you for the opportunity to make it right for you! As we embark on our journey towards our 11th year in business, the results of our most recent client survey are more important than ever. We want to ensure that we are continuing to serve our clients in a way that provides the most value to them and ultimately fulfills our vision of providing "Personal Service, Practical Expertise." What were some of the results? Client testimonials In addition to these results, the survey also provided us with client testimonials. These testimonials provide us with valuable insight into the minds of our clients that go beyond a simple "yes" or "no" answer. "Your professionals are always available for questions and to help when a situation just "comes up" without warning. I am never made to feel as though its about how much is this going to cost, instead your professionals make me feel like "how much" can we help you!” “Clear Path always goes above and beyond. I work with Margaret and Michelle and I love working with both of them. They always so much help and they've come to know the company and so well, their advice is always great!” “Clear Path was always prompt in getting back to me. When I needed them they got back to me immediately. The issues I had were time sensitive - I had to deal with them right away. Clear Path did not leave me hanging and waiting.” “A review of our NEER statement found an employee who was left open when in fact the claim had been closed. The review was free and it resulted in a rebate of $7000.00!” Thank You All of the above testimonials and results are used to help us refine and improve our services, and understand exactly what our clients value and look for in an HR and disability management consultant. Once again, we would like to extend a big thank you to all of our clients that participated in this survey. We look forward to continuing to serve you through 2014! We'd love to connect with you!
November 1st, 2013 marked a momentous milestone for Clear Path Employer Services. It was on this day, exactly 10 years ago, that the business came into fruition. From it's humble beginnings in Anna's living room to a thriving and growing company with over 100 clients and a team of over 20 dedicated team members, there is no denying that Clear Path has come a long way over these past ten years. In celebration of this achievement, we decided to host a big Client Appreciation Event on the date of our anniversary. The purpose of this event was to recognize and appreciate all of those who have helped us get to where we are today. With over 60 people in attendance - valued clients, partners, and employees - we were really able to ring in this occasion in style! One of the highlights of the event were our three incredible speakers: Matthew Mihailovich from Hicks Morley kicked it off with a talk on "Human Resources Management in an Increasingly Complex World." His seminar covered a wide variety of issues including managing the aging workforce, mental illness at work, and dealing with workplace violence and harassment. I think it's safe to say that all of you in attendance were impressed with his killer acting skills! Anna Aceto-Guerin from Clear Path Employer Services followed Matthew's seminar with a brief overview of some of the recent updates and changes in the WSIB. Her seminar touched on the new eStatement capabilities and the modernization of the appeals process. Last to close off our seminar series was Joan Binetti with a session entitled "Take a Giant Leap in Leadership Performance." This interactive and engaging session was a hit with everyone! From the mini dishcloth folding competition to the red clown nose on Anna, Joan's creative delivery really helped instill the importance of positive leadership performance in the workplace. We would also like to thank all of those who donated prizes for our event: Thank you so much to all of those who were able to join us at our Customer Appreciation Event! We are so grateful for the continued support of our clients and can think of no better way to celebrate our tenth year anniversary as a company. We hope that you thoroughly enjoyed your time! Here is what some of our clients have to say about their overall experience: “Loved the speakers! Very relevant topics, very dynamic! Great food, great prizes. Time for networking.” "By far Matthew and Joan were the best speakers I've heard in any seminar/conference I've attended this year. Absolutely phenomenal. So interactive, engaging, and knowledgeable!" “I loved the topics the speakers covered and the opportunity to ask questions and network. Food was great!" “All speakers were very informative, the food was great and it was just a lot of fun!” “It was good to see faces so I can relate them to the emails and voices on the phone. It's interesting to hear how Clear Path got started "in the living room"...kind of like Steve Jobs and his garage. Lunch was very good. Overall a great way to start the day and end the week.” “Very nice event - great way to celebrate your success and have your clients together for networking too!” We'd love to connect with you!

What our guests had to say...We had a great time meeting new people and seeing some familiar faces. Please enjoy the pictures and read some of the comments we received from our guests. Anna. I wanted to congratulate you and your team on your awesome Open House and your great new location! It looks like a fantastic spot for the Clear Path team. Secondly, thanks very much for inviting Tom and I to the Open House. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - the lunch and company were great! Thanks also for the nice gifts. Our H/R team enjoyed sharing the chocolates. Caitlin and I enjoyed ourselves immensely! The good conversation with all the staff and fellow clients, the food, the prizes, the reflexology hand massage etc., all made our day! Our Cambridge terminal is not too far from you so we might drop by sometime for a visit. Thank you again. Thank you for having us. It was an excellent opportunity for me to meet the Clear Path team. Christine and I both very much enjoyed attending the event. Thank you again for hosting the event. Thanks Allie! I had a great time, it was a good event! Thanks for inviting me! We'd love to connect with you!
![]() The HRPA conference has just wrapped up, but we are still buzzing with excitement over what an amazing three days Clear Path had in Toronto at the conference. Between the tradeshow, attending keynote presentations and presenting two seminars of our own, it was a full three days! We were so excited to have been chosen to speak on two topics this year. It is a prestigious honour to be chosen to speak once let alone twice, as up to potentially 4000 applications are submitted to the Conference Committee each year. On Wednesday February 1st, Anna started the morning off by presenting “Averting a Crisis: Dealing with a Potential Bill: 168 Situation” to a full room of over 100 attendees! This session provided practical tips you should take to prevent or defuse workplace violence, ways to spot workplace harassment and best practices on how to manage these situations when they occur. Participants at the seminar had the opportunity to enter to win a Clear Path Do-It-Yourself Bill 168 Package. The lucky winner was Kimberley L. from Virtual High School! Congratulations Kimberley! In the afternoon Anna and Brenda co-presented “Dealing with WSIB Repeat Offenders”. Combining real world case studies with practical how to tips, Anna and Brenda were able to bring their extensive background in WSIB Claims Management and provide a session that was both informative and engaging. Exploring the claims management process and employer obligations under WSIA and the new re-integration system participants learned strategies to deploy when faced with a WSIB “repeat offender” and examples of how medical professionals can be leveraged to support your injured employees, challenge medical evidence and get workers back to their pre-injury job. Congratulations to Asli A. from Concord Steel Centre Ltd. who was the lucky winner of the draw for a complimentary registration to an upcoming Clear Path learning session- “ Demystifying the WSIB’s NEER Program”! Clear Path also kept busy live tweeting throughout the conference. We were mentioned as a top influencer twice on the HRPA Hashcaster board, and on Thursday February 2nd, we made top contributor! It was great to be so active and connected with fellow attendees during those three days! Follow Clear Path on Twitter, and check out what we were tweeting about during the conference! Being at the HRPA conference and attending the keynote presentations was a very motivational, inspiring experience that makes you rethink not only your business approach but also choices you make in your personal life. A common theme from keynote speakers like Amanda Lang (of Lang&O’Leary), Marshal Goldsmith (renowned coach to leaders) and Neil Parischa (author of Book of Awesome) was “unleashing your inner 3 year old”. Learning to be innovative, take risks and exploring challenges to increase our productivity as individuals and organizations. One of the points that resonated was that “Play can change the world”-Kevin Carroll. Embracing creativity and promoting it within your organization, and not “swimming in a sea of sameness” –Josh Linkner were all great tips. All the keynote presentations left a lasting impression that it’s important to take stock, learning to appreciate the little things and be willing to take risks and seize the moment. We encourage all our readers to embrace play, live outside the box, and don’t get sucked back into "the sameness" and miss opportunities that are right in front of you. Thank you HRPA for an amazing three days! Can’t wait until the 2013 Conference! View Clear Path’s HRPA Conference photos on Facebook We'd love to connect with you!
